Strengthening accounting literacy for teachers and students in Lokpaikat Tapin
Main Article Content
Abstract
This community service article discusses an accounting literacy outreach program for teachers and students in Lokpaikat, Tapin Regency. The program was motivated by the tendency of students to perceive accounting as a difficult and less attractive subject, although accounting knowledge is useful for personal finance, entrepreneurship, business documentation, and career planning. The activity aimed to strengthen basic accounting awareness, explain the practical benefits of accounting, and introduce accounting-related career pathways. The program used a qualitative community service design through outreach, socialization, handout distribution, discussion, consultation, and participant feedback. The results showed that the participants gained a broader understanding of accounting as a practical literacy rather than merely a technical school subject. Participants were able to relate accounting to daily financial recording, business activities, and professional opportunities. The discussion also indicated high interest in advanced topics, including tax accounting, management accounting, government accounting, hotel accounting, and environmental accounting. The article concludes that contextual accounting outreach can support the quality of accounting learning by improving motivation, relevance, and career awareness. Future programs should include transaction-recording practice, simple financial statement simulation, and follow-up mentoring to strengthen applied competence.
